Police are questioning a man about a large grass fire which is threatening several properties at Mount Isa in Queensland’s north west.
The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) says the blaze started at 4:00am (AEST) in the Leichardt River bed.
QFRS spokesman Ross Mutzelburg says crews are working to protect a caravan park in West Street.
“There have been quite a number of residential properties that back onto West Street threatened earlier in the morning,” he said.
“At this stage we are protecting structures.”
Mr Mutzelburg says crews will back-burn in the river bed once the blaze has been contained.
“We have four fire crews on scene at the present time, but at this stage there has been no damage,” he said.
“The fire is confined to the river bed and the main problem is smoke.
“We believe everyone is safe at the present time.”
There has been no damage to property so far.
Police say a man is in custody helping with enquiries into the cause of the fire.
