Sunday trading comes to Town

By Penney Wilson

Sunday trading kicked off June 24, and will be held each month to coincide with the Centenary Markets day.

The Charters Towers Chamber of Commerce and Mines Inc is encouraging businesses to open their doors for the 4th Sunday of the month to support the markets and tourism in the Towers.

Chamber will be running ads for 3 days a week, in the week leading up to the 4th Sunday trading for the next six months to support this initiative, which is something Diana Lynch from Poppet Head has been passionate about getting up and running. Stores such as Pollards has been opening every Sunday for their customers, but this is a concerted effort to get more businesses to open so that locals and visitors alike can experience shopping that is unique to Charters Towers.

Stores participating in the one Sunday a month trading are:

 · Charters Towers Furniture Court

 · Towers Toys

 · Sirella

 · Today’s Image

· Poppet Head

· Fuschia Belle

· Pollards

… with Toys of Yesteryear, Stock Exchange Café, Peppers, The Cookhouse, AMP Project Studio (Music Shop) and Grand Secret Books also being open on the day.

For those locals who work all week and do not get a chance to shop this also gives them an opportunity to buy local and support the town. Stores will be open between 10am and 1pm, this allows those who are out and about to go down to experience the flavour of the markets and then come and browse in the stores that are open on the day.

Chamber would like to thank those who have come on board and are participating in this.

2012 dates for Sunday Trading are as follows:

  • June 24
  • July 22
  • August 26
  • September 23
  • October 28
  • November 25
  • December 23
