Port expansion to go ahead at Bowen, albeit at a slower pace
Despite earlier plans being all but scrapped, Abbot Point redevelopment will continue in advance of exploitation of the coal-rich regions to the south of Charters Towers, albeit in a more conservative manner.
Abbot Point is earmarked as the rail-head for a 500km line to the recently approved megamine, Alpha Coal, south of Clermon. Development of the Port facility will see current annual export capacity of 200 million tonnes increasing to 360 million tonnes in a move that would help to secure the economic development of north Queensland.
The Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Jeff Sweeney, said the Port of Abbot Point was an important strategic asset for the state and its successful future expansion would play a key role in Queensland’s economic development.
